About Castlespedia

Castlespedia is a free, independent encyclopedia dedicated to the world's most extraordinary castles, fortresses, and palaces. Our mission is to make castle history accessible to everyone — whether you are a seasoned traveler planning your next heritage trip, a student researching medieval architecture, or simply someone who has always been captivated by towers, drawbridges, and the stories they hold.

What We Cover

We currently feature in-depth articles on over 150 castles spanning 30+ countries. Each article covers the castle's founding history, its most important rulers, architectural highlights, major sieges or battles, and practical visitor information. We do not publish short summaries — every article is written to give you a thorough understanding of the site.

Our coverage ranges from the iconic — Neuschwanstein, Alhambra, Windsor — to the lesser-known gems that deserve far more attention, such as Akershus Fortress in Oslo, Trakai Island Castle in Lithuania, and Vadstena Castle in Sweden.

Our Languages

All castle articles are available in five languages: English, German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. We believe that history belongs to everyone, and language should not be a barrier to learning about the world's architectural heritage.

Who We Are

Castlespedia is an independent project run by history enthusiasts. We are not affiliated with any tourism board, travel agency, or commercial operator. Our goal is purely educational: to document, explain, and celebrate the extraordinary built heritage that humans have left behind over the past thousand years.
